The Onix Z5 Pickleball Paddle is stated as one of the most popular pickleball paddles in the game today. Here we go through what others say about the paddle – primarily the marketers of and of course some of the users of the paddle via the testimonials they give the Z5.
It is stated by the marketers that it is because of it’s outstanding touch and ball control which is a very appealing aspect to those with a dominant dink game and would make for a great doubles paddle if true to its word.
It is also stated that it can deliver concentrated power which is a very attractive element to a singles player and more so one with a tennis playing background – because we have that natural tennis player approach to lean towards being a banger of the game.
Onix marketing also state of the Z5 that it has a medium-weight design which says that the paddle is of medium weight (which is more about paddle material than design when it comes to using the maximum size allowed by the rules) for all-around performance.
The Z5 might be a fantastic paddle by the way however, this is a review about its specs and marketing from a realists approach so that we can see through the fluff to and ascertain if the Z5 could be as good as they say it is and consequently see you go onto own one.
Ok – the Z5 has a Nomex core or more technically a Nomex ‘Honeycomb’ Core. What does that mean or at least what is Nomex?
Nomex in this paddle is said to provide excellent power while maintaining control.
Nomex is a synthetic aramid fiber. Aramid fibers are a class of heat-resistant synthetic fibers that by default are vey strong. They are used in aerospace and military applications, for ballistic-rated body armor fabric and ballistic composites, in bicycle tires, maritime ropes boat hull reinforcement. It is also used as an asbestos substitute and in this case, core material for pickleball paddles!
It has natural high strength to weight ratio which is one of its attractive features to be used in paddles.
One reason for this is that Nomex bonds well with graphite which helps to solidify the paddles structure which helps to eliminate the formation of paddle “dead spots.”
It is said to offer light-weight characteristics for added speed, pop, and maneuverability.
Weight for the Z5 is given as MEDIUM-WEIGHT which the marketing states a Balances power and speed for all-around performance.
They also state the WIDE BODY SHAPE Extends the width of an oversized paddle shape for the largest sweet spot
For tennis lovers, the Z5 also comes with a TENNIS HANDLE. The handle apparently mimics the handle shape of a table tennis racket with a flared, wood handle. Can I say that for the most part as a tennis player, most pickleball paddles go pretty close to mimicking tennis handles and there really is no discernible difference that I have been able to notice – at least any that would affect my play.
The ONIX Z5 Pickleball Paddle is the flagship paddle in the Onix Lineup and is one of the most popular paddles in the world. The wide body shape gives players an 8 and a half inch hitting surface with a generous sweat spot.
The nomex core balances power with excellent control especially for dinks right at the net. Both graphite and composite options are available which weigh in at 7.8 to 8.7 ounces.
Z5 also features a 4 and a quarter inch grip with a 5 inch handle. With the control and touch that you get off this paddle it is no wonder why it is one of the most popular paddles in the game today.

I bought this paddle after reading many reviews and comparisons showing this paddle in the top five rated paddles for the last several years. At my gym, about half of the 40 regular players also use this paddle. It has not disappointed me. It's a good balance of touch and power.
